The main goal of equine medicine and surgery is to promote preventative medicine in order to reduce the risk of disease in our horses, mules and donkeys. Vaccination programs should be customized to each farm with regards to the risk of exposure to infectious disease. In addition, we promote routine annual physical examinations and oral examinations in our equine patients in order to ensure that there are no underlying diseases that have been undetected. Due to the progression of veterinary medicine in the equine field, our horses are living longer lives. It is not uncommon to see horses and ponies in their early 30's, as long as routine preventative care has been done. As our horses get older, they are more prone to developing chronic diseases that may affect their well-being, such as Cushing's disease, renal disease and dental problems. We promote geriatric blood work in horses older than 18 years of age. Chronic diseases, such as Cushing's disease, can be controlled by the use of medication. The articles contained in this section are meant to educate our clients as well as promote equine health. Please keep in mind that every horse is an individual and each farm is different; each farm should have an individualized health care plan for their horses. Working with your veterinarian to ensure that your horse is appropriately protected against infectious diseases, is receiving routine dental care and is receiving a detailed physical examination on a yearly basis will ensure that your horse will live a productive life.
