Camelids, such as llamas and alpacas, are slowly becoming a more common member of many farms. Used as companion, pack and guard animals, camelids are an easy animal to maintain and care. In the southeast, the heat and humidity require that the animals be sheared in the summer to avoid overheating. The most common health concerns include parasitism, nutritional disorders (obesity and hepatic lipidosis) and management issues, in particular related to the reproductive tract. Fertility disorders related primarily to management problems and should be assessed by your veterinarian. We are happy to discuss any questions or problems you may be having with your camelid.
