Bovine Health The purpose of bovine production medicine is to diagnose, treat and control diseases which affect the health and production of cattle. The purpose of cattle is to provide wholesome and safe meat and milk and by-products for consumers. The veterinarian's goal is to assist the producer in integrating health and production management of the herd, economically and humanely. Food safety and the control of zoonotic diseases are emphasized. The following goals are kept in mind when conducting a herd health visit: 1. Educating the producer Producers are provided with practical knowledge and skills that are required for economical, efficient and profitable herd health. Producers are educated on infectious diseases, how to reduce the spread of disease, the risk factors for disease spread and principals of infectious disease control. Biosecurity measures are emphasized. 2. Identification of individual animals Individual animal identification at birth and the recording, collection, analysis and use of animal health and production data are essential for monitoring progress, disease surveillance and investigation. 3.
