Overweight horses, or "easy keepers" are common in the horse population. This may be due to a combination of factors, including large caloric intake relative to the amount of energy metabolized, genetic predisposition (certain breeds appear to be more prone to being overweight than others), overfeeding, or abnormalities with metabolism and hormonal dysregulation (Cushing's disease and equine metabolic syndrome). Overnutrition is harmful to your horse's health in the long run, as in other species, and special diets are available upon consultation with your veterinarian or an equine nutritionist. Attached are powepoint presentations from the AAEP on the overweight horse and laminitis, which is a common problem in overweight horses, especially with metabolic disorders.
